Nowadays, quality higher engineering education is impossible without comprehensive use of modern Computer-Aided Design systems, computer modeling and engineering analysis. It is known that one of the most powerful CAD/CAM/CAE systems is SOLIDWORKS, which is widely used in machine-building enterprises around the world in various industrial sectors.
SOLIDWORKS is now the de facto industrial standard in many countries and is widely used by leading industrial enterprises, particularly, in Ukraine for designing parts, assemblies, and machines of any complexity and purpose. The SOLIDWORKS is also used worldwide to train modern specialists in universities when studying a range of engineering disciplines – from simple computer modeling tasks to complex engineering analysis in various fields, including engineering calculations, such as strength calculations, kinematics and dynamics of mechanical systems, computational fluid dynamics analysis, etc.
Since 2011, at Khmelnytskyi National University has been functioning a SOLIDWORKS CAD/CAM/CAE Center (scientific, training and production center for computer-aided design and analysis, led by Prof. Viacheslav Kharzhevskyi). As a result of grant support and agreements with Dassault Systémes SOLIDWORKS Corp., university students have the opportunity to take official SOLIDWORKS CSWA certification exams on knowledge of computer modeling methods, with the possibility of obtaining official Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate (CSWA) and Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional (CSWP) certificates, which are international and recognized worldwide. These international certificates are considered as an advantage for employment opportunities both in Ukraine and in world companies.
In order to prepare our students for certification exams, scientific seminars are held at the SOLIDWORKS center of our university by professor Viacheslav Kharzhevskyi. As a result of such training, students have the opportunity to take certification exams online, as the university has the official status of SOLIDWORKS Academic Certification Provider.
The certification server of the SOLIDWORKS Corp. organize these exams in online mode. The SOLIDWORKS certification exam consists of 14 test tasks, which include a series of tasks on 3D modeling of parts, assemblies, as well as test questions on creation of drawings.
It should be noted that the academic process at our university is conducted using the latest version of SOLIDWORKS, which is available for academic establishments – 2022, and students have the opportunity to work on licensed versions of SOLIDWORKS not only in the university labs but also using their home computers.
Since last October, students from the Faculty of Engineering, Transport and Architecture have taken an additional advanced training course at the SOLIDWORKS center of our university, which included the following topics:
- Advanced functionality of SOLIDWORKS for complex geometry creation.
- Studying literature recommended by the SOLIDWORKS Corp. for preparing for the CSWA certification exams.
- Advanced SOLIDWORKS capabilities in creation of drawings.
- Creation of the complex assemblies. Automation of design work and parameterization techniques (both parts and assemblies).
- Designing of the sheet metal parts and weldments. Strength calculations using finite elements analysis method (FEA).
- Theoretical preparation according to the requirements for a Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate (CSWA) specialists.
As a result of the training conducted at our SOLIDWORKS center, 26 students from the Faculty of Engineering, Transport and Architecture have successfully passed CSWA certification exams. The following students have become certified specialists:

On April 27, an awarding ceremony of Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate (CSWA) certificates took place in the university conference hall (3-207). The CSWA certificates were presented to our students by the Rector of the University, Serhii Matiukh. The students were also congratulated by the dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Transport, and Architecture, Victor Oleksandrenko, the Heads of the Departments, as well as the Head of the university SOLIDWORKS Center – prof. Viacheslav Kharzhevskyi.
It should be noted that these exams are the same as those taken by students at leading universities worldwide. They represent an independent assessment of students’ knowledge and skills in computer 3D modeling, recognized worldwide. The obtained certificate is permanent. Each certificate has a unique number, which can be verified for authenticity on the official SOLIDWORKS website. It is also important to note that in addition to paper certificates, students also receive a record in the international database of certified SOLIDWORKS users, which allows them to confirm their level of qualification not only in Ukraine but also in other countries worldwide.

The SOLIDWORKS Center at our university (http://solidworks.com.ua) is the largest among higher education establishments in Ukraine, SOLIDWORKS is implemented at the Faculty of Engineering, Transport, and Architecture as a part of the comprehensive computer training of students in engineering specialties within a number of academic courses.
Overall, during the existence of the SOLIDWORKS Center at our university, 578 official certification exams have already been conducted, and 504 certificates have been issued.
Furthermore, under the guidance of Prof. Kharzhevskyi, the SOLIDWORKS Center (Training and Scientific CAD/CAM/CAE Center) successfully cooperates with Ukrainian machine-building enterprises in the field of technical support of engineering software, and provide the scientific consultations for the enterprises.
Today, the deep knowledge of computer technologies for Computer-Aided Design and engineering analysis is necessary for modern specialists, which is the crucial tool for the succeed in the future. We congratulate our students on successful passing the SOLIDWORKS certification!
